Submission Title
Stained Reverie
Abstract
This piece was created using ISBI paper 913 and a single histological image. The stain colors and concentrations are separated and then mixed back together. In this process, the 3-layer RGB image has to be reshaped into a 3-row matrix, with each RGB layer represented as a single row. A mistake in the inverse procedure to recover the image creates this piece. The red, green, and blue channels are shuffled resulting in unrealistic but appealing new colors. The cell structures of the three channels are not aligned, which gives an oneiric feeling to this image. Straight lines cross the center of the image, they are the original borders which suggest that the image is a four element collage. This juxtaposition breaks the fantasy. In fact, this image is neither one nor the combination of four. It is now a new piece with the goal to remind us that we must be really careful when dealing with clinical data and machine learning techniques that might be opaque to human beings.
