‘Nucleus’
Abstract
‘Nucleus’ is a 3D enlargement of a microscopic photo of 3 brain cells, lasered into glass. The nucleus, dendrites and synapses of the cells reaching like tentacles in all directions seeking connection between the two buildings and their residents.
The glass panel consists of 3 parts, illuminated in a unique way so that the lasered photo glows up against the background. I explored advanced techniques to obtain detailed photographs of neurons. My search took me to the Lichtman Lab at Harvard University in Boston, which specializes in visualizing human brain tissue. Professor Lichtman gave permission to use his material for this artwork. TheThe technical aspect of ‘Nucleus’ is remarkable. The windows are triple layered. The 3D image was engraved inside the center glass plate using laser technology to a thickness of just 8mm by Isophon Glas, a German company with the only laser machine in Europe equipped for the task.
