Submission Title
Patterns of Pathology: finding the normal and abnormal in a sea of brainwaves, 1940 – 1960
Abstract
This work examines the EEG Atlas by Gibbs & Gibbs from 1941, a groundbreaking piece in EEG research, from a posthumanist perspective. Marlene Bart reflects on pattern recognition in the context of EEG, the definitions of normalcy and deviation, and their evolution in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). The work stems from an artistic-scientific collaboration between Marlene Bart and Flora Lysen.
The central question guiding this artistic exploration is: What influence do historical findings and current technological developments have on society’s definitions of health and illness? Bart views EEG not merely as raw data, but as an interactive, dialogic, and posthuman language between humans and machines. For her work, Bart utilizes EEG data from the Gibbs & Gibbs Atlas, focusing on data from women aged 30-40. Chess serves as an interface, and in an AR component, EEG data are intertwined.
