Worms in Wonderland
Abstract
“You may have evolved from worm to man, but much within you is still worm” F. Nietzsche.
Hidden in the soil’s embrace all over the world, mesmerizing spectacles unfold: A bustling community of microscopic creatures, nematodes, move in all dimensions and form a society. Nematodes are the most abundant animal phylum on Earth, resembling a mindboggling 4 out of 5 animal individuals on this planet. They can be found in virtually every habitat, from the deepest ocean trenches to the highest mountains.
This image of freshly hatched Caenorhabditis elegans larvae, with one single embryo that failed to develop in the very center, reflects upon life & death and is an hommage to the biological significance of nematodes.
