THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING ISBI 2023

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to thank you for attenifng the 20th IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging. ISBI 2023, organized jointly by the IEEE Signal Processing Society and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, was held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, April 18-21, 2023.

For its twentieth anniversary, ISBI took place for the first time ever in Latin America. Cartagena de Indias offered to us the charm of its colonial architecture, the excitement of a vivid nightlife, fascinating cultural festivals, and lush landscapes. Located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, Cartagena was the perfect place to meet as it is one of the most beautiful, well-preserved cities in Latin America, and has been named a "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO. The city offered to ISBI attendees the opportunity to walk along its colorful streets and plazas, surrounded by 11kms of colonial city walls, which stands as one of the most complete fortifications in the Americas.

This year’s program included five Keynotes Talks presented by world-renowned imaging scientists and clinicians: Drs. Marcel Van Herk, Yakeel Quirov, Lena Maier-Hein, Samni Koyejo, and Vasilis Ntziachristos. In addition, for the first time at ISBI, we had two virtual keynotes in other time zones: Qi Dou and Islem Rekik. Our program included 10 challenges, 8 tutorials, 9 special sessions, covering a broad range of topics in medical imaging, as well as a session from NIH on funding opportunities and grant writing tips. Presentations of 4-pages papers (521) and abstracts (118), comprised 21 oral sessions, 3 in person and 2 virtual poster sessions, and a virtual session for all authors to interact with virtual attendees. As was done in recent ISBIs, we hosted the fourth edition of the Clinical Day, a day-long special session designed to promote the exchange of emerging knowledge of biomedical imaging in the clinical fields. Additionally, we held the first ever Industrial Day, in which we discussed about the latest products in our field by industry leaders, learnt about the journey of medical imaging startups that have now become successful companies, and had for the first time a startup pitch competition. We proposed 3 networking lunches, including: a matchmaking lunch between academia and industry, a lunch with leaders for students to interact with faculty mentors, and a women lunch to openly discuss issues pertaining to women in science.

We also had a great lineup of social activities for everyone: a welcome reception on the terrasse at the conference center, a cultural evening with Colombian Dances and Afro-Colombian music, a Chiva - a traditional bus with onboard musicians -, followed by dancing activities, a traditional sewing workshop with Colombian indigenous women (wayuu community), and a relaxation room with two scheduled morning events.

Muchas Gracias Cartagena!
